Breed Notes

The Spinone Italiano is an ancient Italian breed whose exact origin is unknown. It is believed that he stems from native Italian hounds, Spanish Pointers, and members of the French Griffon family. An all purpose gundog, he is noted for his highly acute scent ability, his soft mouth and his ability to endure the elements and terrain of his homeland. He is adaptable to any type of shooting and particularly suited to heavy cover and cold, wet conditions. He is regarded by many as the best pointing dog of all. Today the breed is recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the American Kennel Club, the Kennel Club of Great Britain, and the Canadian Kennel Club.
The Spinone Italiano has what is described as a "distinguished, great-grandfather look." He is a noble, wise and protective dog.
The Spinone Italiano is a squarely built dog. The length from sternum to buttock is equal to the height at the withers. His head is long. His skull is flat and lean. The muzzle is square when viewed from the front and should equal the length of the backskull. The bridge of the muzzle should be slightly Roman. The bite is scissors. The eyes are large, fairly round and open. The ears are set level to the corner of the eye, triangular in shape and carried low. The top is slightly rounded. The nose is round with large nostrils. Nose color is dependent upon coat color. The neck is strong, thick and muscular. The throat has additional skin that forms a double dewlap. The chest is round and deep, extending to the elbow. The distance from ground to elbow is half the height at the withers. The topline has two segments. The front part slopes slightly downward from the withers for about six inches along the back. Then it rises gradually to a solid, well-arched loin. The tail is docked to half of its length. The coat is thick, tough and wiry. It fits close to the body. Ideally the coat is one-and-one-half inches to two-and-one-half inches in length. Longer coat won the head forms eyebrows, mustached and beard. Coat colors may be white, white with orange, white with chestnut, and either coloration with roan. Average height is between 22 and 27 inches. Average weight is from 70 to 80 pounds, proportionate with the size of the dog.
